In the African American community, we hear it all too much, that the small businesses aren’t supported by their colleagues, customers, friends, family, or other larger chains. Colleagues are said to have secret competitions that don’t allow them to share ideas, information or business tips. Customers are said to complain about the price, although they will spend more money of something you sell at a high end retailer. Friends don’t tell other friends or family members about your services because they doubt your true knowledge. Family want discounts because they don’t want to pay full price to support you. The larger chains don’t have time to pick up a small chain and show them the ropes.

There are many reasons black owned small businesses don’t succeed or take years to be recognized as a “real” business. The main reasons are the ones listed above, but it also comes from the owners not reaching their full potential and taking the initiative to break that chain. Just because a business does something similar to yours doesn’t mean you can’t support it. Building up a community where black Americans learn to trust each others services and products needs to start now.
We are honoring small black owned businesses that have shown support to other small businesses or have been a pillar in their communities.
