If you're writing for a blog you can use a personal tone with engaging words you would use in a normal conversation. While writing for a magazine or business purpose would require a professional tone with your direct writing style.

There are four writing styles that you can fall into:

1) Descriptive writing - descriptive writing is a style that paints pictures for the readers. You want to be specific and detailed so readers see exactly what you envision while writing. Many poets and romance novelist write in this style.

2) Persuasive writing - persuasive writing tries to convince readers that what the writer is telling you is the point of view you should have. These writers are recommending something. Many marketing people use this style of writing.

3) Expository writing - expository writing is used with your writing about facts. You give information and let the reader decide what to take from it. This type of writing is done for news articles, non-fiction books and scientific writing.

4) Narrative writing - this style of writing is for creative writing and has a plot with characters and settings. Many that write novels, and screenplays use this style of writing.
