Sugar Jam The Southern Kitchen

So as you know, every month two friends of mine and I try a new restaurant for a ladies night out. This time my friend, Stephanie, picked Sugar Jam The Southern Kitchen and I'd never heard of it. Boy was I glad she did. This place has a nice southern feel in the heart of Scottsdale, AZ.

The decor created a magical ambience that allowed us to feel comfortable. On this Saturday, there was a live DJ playing all the 80's and 90's hits. It was cute, quaint and hidden, but people knew about it because it was full. There was no waiting but almost every table was taken up but sexy, classy people having a great time and enjoying the atmosphere.

We waited a while because one of their fryers went down, but it was okay because the music and conversation kept us going. We each ordered a different mimosa for a beverage and they were great. The menu isn't overwhelming with a lot of things. You get the true southern treats; fried chicken, greens, baked beans, corn bread, etc. Don't be fooled by the simplicity of that because they put their own twist on the food and it is seasoned to perfection.

Let's talk food!

Price: The overall bill was $107 for all three of us and we just split it paying about $40 each with tip. I had the honey butter bone-in fried chicken with a side of collard greens and cowboy baked beans. To drink I had the fantasy island mimosa. Great price for

Presentation: The food came out looking great. There was no fancy garnish, but what southern food really does? The plates came with small cups of your side dish, which was cute and made it great for sharing.

Quality: When I saw the food I thought it looked good, but that was nothing compared to the actual taste. The chicken was crisp with honey butter and seasoned to perfection. The collard greens were seasoned well and tasted fully cooked but not overcooked. The baked beans were sweet with small pieces of meat. Everything seemed to have just the right flavor.

Quantity: The chicken meal came with three pieces of chicken two small and one large. The sides were moderate size, great for a small eater, but not for someone who eats a lot.

Overall this is the perfect place for a first, second or third date. Meaning this is the place to enjoy all of your favorite things, music, food, friends and atmosphere. This one is a must try. Honestly, there was nothing I could want better, except, a little more attention to service from the servers. They were good, but I had to ask for my second mimosa twice before receiving it. I knew the fryer was down, but not the bar. Otherwise, everything else was perfect. Our server was funny and very outgoing which made the visit even more welcoming. If you haven't been here, you must try it. If you've been here tell us your experience. Another fabulous meal to share with you wonderful people. Happy Eating.
