From panoramic views to the railway’s rich history, there’s something here for everyone. Verde Canyon Railroad is the perfect family-friendly activity during your Arizona vacation.

History

The Verde Canyon Railroad started in 1912 to connect the copper mines in Jerome, Arizona with the Santa Fe Railway tracks that passed through Drake, Arizona. This north-south branch line was owned and operated by the Santa Fe Railway from 1912 to 1988.

David Durbano bought this branch line in 1988, and officially named it Verde Canyon Railroad in 1990 when they began to offer scenic excursions. Today, Verde Canyon Railroad is a huge tourist attraction, receiving an average of 90,000 visitors per year.

Location

The Verde Canyon Railroad is about 25 miles west, or a 40-minute drive, from Sedona. You will take Highway 89 to Cornfield Road, then turn right onto Mingus Avenue. After driving for 1.8 miles, turn right on North Main Street. Continue driving down Main Street until you see a sign that reads “Verde Canyon Railroad.” There will then be a turn-off that will lead you to the train depot.

If you are traveling from Phoenix, it will be about a two-hour drive. Take I-17 north and then take exit 287. From there, you’ll turn left and go west on Highway 260 for about 14 miles. At the fifth traffic light, turn left onto Main Street. You will drive past the turn for Tuzigoot National Monument until you see the Verde Canyon Railroad sign.

Important Information

Upon arriving at the Verde Canyon Railroad Depot, you will be able to stroll through the John Bell Museum. This museum is a renovated boxcar that holds historical artifacts, train memorabilia, and stories about the history of this railroad.

After boarding the train, you’ll find comfortable seating, panoramic windows, and friendly service. You can choose from first-class seating, a caboose area (for private parties), or open-air viewing. Each ticket includes both first-class seating and open-air viewing, as well as champagne and appetizers. During the excursion, you’ll hear entertaining narration and classic railroad tunes.

The four-hour train ride goes from Clarkdale to Perkinsville and back. The ride is known for its incredible scenery; the Verde Canyon is known as Arizona’s “other grand canyon.” With captivating views, red rocks, ancient Indian ruins, and rugged terrain, this is one of America’s most scenic train rides.

During the holidays, the Verde Canyon Railroad offers “The Magical Christmas Journey,” which is an excellent activity for the kids. This trip to the North Pole is a one-hour nighttime ride. You’ll meet elves on the train, enjoy lots of Christmas lights, and then eventually stop off at Santa’s village, where you can introduce yourself to Santa and Mrs. Claus.
